It was the "in" look of 1990′s.

you can see the influence weingart had on april greiman. in the similar vein during this period, but heads and shoulders above any of their contemporaries, were 8vo (simon johnston, mark holt, and hamish muir). the ocatvo magazines, their work for factory records and their information design for the royal post were phenomenal.

That’s information that I’ll follow up on and I want to post some Weingart work later. New directions to track down. Thanks so much Pocari Sweaty!

Simon Johnston, one of the 8v0 founders, was an instructor of mine when I went to school at Art Center College of Design, hence my bias :)

Here are a couple of useful links about 8vo:

A fairly recent book published by Mark Holt:

I’m not sure if you have covered the work of Helmut Schmidt a student of Emile Ruder in Basel. He seems to be at the other extreme from Weingart, very close to the minimalist style if the original pioneers of the Swiss (Basel) Graphics but not as dry , formal and poker faced.

Perhaps his long stay in Japan has something to do with or perhaps because he is a thinking artist, he has a unique style that is undoubtedly "swiss" but more humane. I have some of his printed work .

Simon is an amazing designer, I also had him as an instructor and a MFA advisor while at ACCD. 8vo really does hold up well.
